New York, New York
While in New York at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair I took the opportunity to visit some of the great buildings and urban-scapes within Manhattan. There is without doubt a vibrancy and excitement to the city that is enhanced by the built environment. The rich architectural heritage combined with carefully considered contemporary buildings creates a distinctive style and provides a great example of the benefits that good architectural and urban design can provide to a city. The Manhattan architecture exhibited a surprisingly high level of design sophistication – unlike many other American cities. Even the latest buildings by the worlds ‘starchitects’ demonstrated an uncharacteristic level of restraint. Individual buildings sat comfortably within streetscapes, relating to their neighbours, responding to their location, and forming harmonious and vibrant urban-scapes.
